Song of the Bones

The expression “to feel it in your bones” is to know or believe something in the very core of your being. It is more than a fleeting thought or a surface emotion. This phrase evokes a sense that something is a vital part of you—it may be the very essence of you. It can also refer to the wisdom of your heritage or ancestors coming through to you.

Do we associate bones with our ancestors because of the skeleton’s ability to remain long after we have died? Or is there something to also be said about the blood of our ancestors flowing within us—made by our bones? Both are reasonable considerations. We exist because of our ancestors. Their DNA is a part of who we are, and if we have children, it will pass on to them. Research and theories about ancestral or genetic memory suggest our genes and cells may carry spirit, wisdom, and experience as well. We can turn to the Witch Bones to help us navigate and access this information, as well as make more direct contact with our ancestors.

Now, dealing with ancestors can be tricky business. You might not know your heritage, or perhaps you don’t get along with your family. Your ancestors know you, even if you do not know them. You can still call to their wisdom, even if you don’t know their names or origins. Don’t be surprised when, after you reach out to them, some indeed introduce themselves to you and reveal more information about themselves—and, in turn, you!

For those ancestors you didn’t get along with or don’t believe were great people, you don’t have to deal with anyone you don’t want to. You can say no—to ancestors, spirits, and other entities as well. One thing to keep in mind is that it’s entirely possible that those problematic deceased people might take on a different perspective on life after passing on. Transitioning to the next level, the dead can lose some attachments that held them back in life, including some of the weightier chunks of ego—gaining clearer vision about the threads that connect us all. Folks may worry about working with the spirit of a deceased loved one who might have been a devout Christian or other religion that looks down on Witchcraft. Again, I think that most spirits, after they leave their physical body, get a larger sense of how the world works beyond restrictions and previously held stereotypes. I have found this to be true with my maternal grandparents, whom I was very close to, and even the great-grandparents that I never met. They can be wonderful aids and guides in your practice.

Finding the song of our bones can help us heal past wounds and aid our own work. I’m not saying it’s your job to fix your ancestors, but rather to see this work as an opportunity to build strength and gain wisdom moving forward. When it comes down to it, many of the death and ancestor rituals we do as part of our culture are more for our own benefit than for the deceased.
